Parking lots can be a safe place for your car. Your vehicle is potentially more secure in a parking lot than parked on a street. However, parking lots and parking garages can be intimidating. Shop Around for the best parking spot for you and your car!
Park in well-lit lots with an attendant or regular security patrols. Even if you have to shell out some cash, it could be worth it.
If the lot has security cameras, choose a parking spot near a camera. That camera could act as a deterrent to a potential attacker.
Park your car so that you can see the drivers side as you return to your vehicle. That means you might have to back into that spot.
As you park your car, and again when you return to it, scan the parking lot for anything or anyone suspicious.
Unlock your door when you reach it, no sooner! Once you get in your car, lock your doors, start your engine and leave the parking lot immediately. This is not the time or place to check your phone.
Northeast Ohio, as well as other regions across the US, have been seeing a dramatic increase in car jackings. These car jackings are not only happening in parking lots, but in the victims’ own driveway. Always, always stay aware of your surroundings. Being in your own driveway does NOT make you exempt.
