LET’S TALK PARKING LOTS!
Parking lots can be a safe place….FOR YOUR CAR. Your car is potentially more secure in a parking lot than parked on a street. And, if the parking lot is free….that’s a really good thing for you wallet, but maybe not so much for your safety!
Park in well-lit lots with an attendant or regular security patrols. Even if you have to shell out some cash, it could be worth it.
If the lot has security cameras, choose a parking spot near a camera. That camera could act as a deterrent to a potential attacker.
As you park your car, and again when you return to it, scan the parking lot for anything or anyone suspicious.
Once you get in your car, lock your doors, start your engine and leave the parking lot immediately. This is not the time or place to check your phone.
Northeast Ohio, as well as other regions across the US, have been seeing a dramatic increase in car jackings. These car jackings are not only happening in parking lots, but in the victims’ own driveway. Always, always stay aware of your surroundings. Being in your own driveway does NOT make you exempt.
Next time you’re in a parking lot. Look around and notice the number of people sitting in their cars looking at their phones. All their focus is on that phone.
You can stand right next to their car door and watch them. Maybe even give a little wave. Chances are extremely high that you won’t be noticed.
As we were working on this parking lot article we took a short break to run an errand. One store, one parking lot. On our way in…..two people in two separate vehicles with their faces in their phones. On the way back to the car, a lady in the car next to us was captivated by her phone. Even with our car lock beeping, followed by a door slam and then the ignition starting up, she never took her eyes off her phone.
