Good News / Bad News
Thankfully, we are beginning to see stay-at- home restrictions lifted and we are all venturing out more than we have in the past six months. That’s the good news!
The bad news? We may have become less vigilant about our safety and the safety of our children.
Be aware of the three stages that traffickers use to groom and trap children into a life of exploitation. 1. Grooming/Manipulation Phase
Studying victims online through social media/dating websites/chat rooms then pretending to be their friend, modeling agent, or manager.
2. Scouting Phase
Victims are hunted in places children and youth are known to frequent such as malls, movie theaters, schools, and even juvenile courts and detention facilities. Traffickers are looking for victims exhibiting low self esteem, and who appear to be gullible and easy to manipulate.
3. Trapping
Victims are trapped when threats are made against their family and friends, by being physically abused, and trapped by becoming addicted to drugs.
Talk to your children! Monitor their acquaintances and activity! Provide them with the training they need to stay safe in today’s volatile world.
STAYING ALERT IN DARK PARKING LOTS
As daylight continues to decrease this fall, parking lots will become more dangerous. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, nearly 1,400 violent crimes committed each day in parking lots.
Park in well-lit lots or structures with regular security patrols.
Avoid parking next to large trucks or vans.
Scan the parking lot for anything or anyone suspicious, both as you park your car, and when you return.
Once you get in your car, lock your doors, start your engine and leave the parking lot immediately. This is not the time or place to check your phone.
Choose parking spots near security cameras, which act as a deterrent.
“Personal Safety is an individual’s ability to go about their everyday life free from the threat or fear of psychological, emotional or physical harm from others.
